Tips to prevent Earthquake Damage

Earthquake is the follow of seismic activity of an area that suddenly releases energy. It ordinarily occurs within a duration of time and come in several waves. Earthquake is a coarse earth activity that can cause damage to house and furniture. It might even cause deaths to human and animals. Preventing the earthquake is kind of impossible to be done by the coarse people. But, preventing the damage of an earthquake is not impossible to be done by the coarse people.

There are several things that you can do to minimize the damage of an earthquake. These things cannot be done in half way because every petite mistake can cause big damage. You might regret it later if you do not care about your own safety. I assure you to rearrange your house in order to preclude the earthquake damage.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

1. The first thing that you can do is to collect your furniture. Avoid buying brittle furniture because it would mess up if it cracked. brittle furniture like glasses might hurt you if it falls down and broken into tiny pieces. You need to rearrange your furniture as well in order to preclude them from falling down or turning over.

2. Tighten your plumbing appliances to avoid leakage. It has to be done especially for the appliances that are associated to gas pipes. You have to store all chemicals and other risky liquid in a safe place like in the cabinet. Do not forget to shut the cabinet tightly. It is to preclude any damage caused by chemicals and risky liquids. Liquid gas is one of the examples of risky liquids that could cause fire.

3. The last thing that I recommend you is to keep fire extinguishers in reachable places nearby your house. Earthquake might cause fire from the spilled risky liquid, electricity problems and so forth. As explained before, risky liquid like liquid gas might cause fire if static electricity occurs. Many other things also possible to cause fire because we never know what would happen in such a life-risking time. Therefore, you need to have fire extinguishers at least one in your house and more for larger house.

From all the tips I stated above, I hope that you can start rearranging your home in order to preclude earthquake damage. This record is made for you who live in an area that has frequent earthquakes. If you do not live in such risky area you can also follow my tips because we never know what might happen to us.

Did Haiti's Earthquake Damage Extremist Islam's Foundation?

On Tuesday of this week, Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake. The destruction has been widespread and the Red Cross estimates that 50,000 people have been killed.

Sadly, that figure could be conservative.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

Aid organisations and the United Nations have appealed to the international community for assistance. The response has been overwhelming, and planes are being turned away from Toussaint L'Ouverture International Airport.

Haiti is regarded as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It has a population of 10 million, with per capita GDP at $US790. 80% of the population live below the poverty line.

Haiti has nothing to offer to the Western world. No natural resources. No oil. Haiti is no threat to the Westerm world. It does not even have an army. There is no need for the Western world to support, or assist, Haiti. The Western world has nothing to gain by assisting Haiti. And the Western world has no Haitian threat is has to be fearful of.

However, news agencies were quick to report on those countries, NGO's and aid agencies that have responded to pleas of assistance.

I praise The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. They have been essential in providing assistance and attempting to coordinate relief efforts.

The United States has pledged and intial 0 million in aid, and Barack Obama has promised more. 800 American paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division were deployed from North Carolina. 2000 marines will be joining them.

America is also sending a naval hospital ship, the USNS Comfort. It is best described as a 'floating hospital'. It has a trauma facility that can treat 1000 patients at a time.

Britain has sent a team to Haiti that will assist with rescue and relief efforts. Gordon Brown has appealed to the Brtish public to donate money to the relief effort.

Israel was one of the first countries to respond, with assistance in search and rescue as well as field hospitals. An Israeli military official, Gidi Shenar, said "We have been in several places in the world. We are bringing our knowledge and we are coming to assist the people over there and save lives. As fast as we can, we will be over there."

This kind of assistance, from the West, is not unique. And it's not limited to predominantly 'Christian countries', like Haiti.

For example, following an earthquake in Iran, in June 2002, America sent aid and supplies to Iran. President Bush stated "Human suffering knows no political boundaries". Following a December 2003 earthquake in Iran, the USA, Russia, Britain, Germany and Spain all offered help.

Israel has sent teams to assist in rescue and aid efforts following, for example, the August 1999 earthquake in Turkey, the January 2001 earthquake in India, the June 2006 earthquake in Indonesia, the December 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Here is a list of countries that were reported, in the 'West' and the 'East', as first to respond to Haiti's calls for assistance:

United States, United Kingdom, China, Brazil, the European Union, Britain, Germany, Israel, France, Switzerland, South Korea and Canada.

There has been amazing support being sent to Haiti from the Muslim and Arab world as well as Muslim and Arab charities. South Africa based Gift of the Givers is just one example of a charity that responded within hours of the news breaking. Turkey is sending a mobile hospital and humanitarian aid to Haiti.

However, there is something that stands out, for me, from the list of countries that were first to respond to Haiti's humanitarian crisis.

And, whether the humanitarian crisis is in Haiti, Sudan, Somalia, Iran or Zimbabwe... the lists of those countries who are first to offer (and indeed provide) assistance, are almost always made up entirely of Infidels

Decoding Disaster - Resistant Construction: New Bridge Expansion Joints Resist Earthquake Damage

In the aftermath of an earthquake, bridges are critical to evacuation and relief efforts. But, in order for a bridge to withstand the violent tremors of a major earthquake, every component must be engineered for seismic durability. Every part must work and move in unison. New expansion joints developed by Watson Bowman Acme now play a major role in the overall flexibility and earthquake preparedness of a bridge.

The innovation, the Wabo X-Cel Modular expansion joint system, required three elements: continuous improvements in product design, public and private sector collaboration and years of testing.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

During a 10-year collaboration between Watson Bowman Acme and The University of California at Berkeley (UCB), full-scale performance tests were conducted at the University's Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center on the X-Cel Modular expansion joint system.

The system underwent successful multi-movement testing at various speeds, ranging from 1 to 50 inches per second, as well as numerous seismic simulators - with no observed damage. Extreme tension applied to the joint during the tests created no significant gapping, leaving bridges not just intact, but passable after a seismic event.

These test results show that the X-Cel Modular system is ideal for segmental, suspension and long-span bridges. The system is also recommended for use on offshore structures and for flexible structures that require a high level of durability.

This is not the first time Watson Bowman Acme has created an expansion joint for seismic survival. A predecessor of the X-Cel Modular system, The Wabo Seismic Modular expansion joint was also designed to withstand the effects of an earthquake. And in January of 1999, it passed the ultimate test.

The "Coffee Growers Axis" region of Colombia dangerously sits on the meeting place of three tectonic plates. Completed in 1997 and built with the Seismic Modular system, The César Gaviria Trujillo Viaduct, spanning 1,443 feet and located in the regional capital city of Pereira, is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in South America. A point of pride in the region, the bridge connects Pereira with the cities of Dosquebradas and Armenia.

On January 25, 1999 those tectonic plates converged causing a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that wreaked havoc on the cities of Armenia and Pereira. The devastating quake killed 1,185 people and injured 4,750. Many structures were not built to meet seismic demands and quickly reduced to rubble. The César Gaviria Trujillo Viaduct remained standing.

Nuclear power damage caused by earthquakes in Japan

We felt that the damage was not repaired in the first nuclear power plant in Fukushima Japan last Friday, met on March 11, an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 northern Honshu, Iceland, Japan, at about 03.00 clock Local. A tsunami of mass and 19.03 clock, the first emergency declaration was issued. The clock at 08.50, an evacuation order for residents in a diameter of three km of the power plant has been granted. The reactor first, second and third automaticallyOperation is stopped and cut off all power. They lost the cooling function.

On the second and third day of hydrogen explosions came in first and third reactors. The radioactive wastes were released into the environment, and recorded radiation in air, water and food by far higher than normal. Efforts to continuous cooling, and radiation reduced in the last week of March. However, the recovery of damages not covered by the April 3 has been reported to the 2011thDamage includes the possibility of a collapse, the worst accident in a nuclear reactor.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

When I heard the news in California, my first thought was that this would give a week or so busy. I thought that at least a concrete plan and a timetable would be developed and released in three to five days. In fact, the most damage were later revealed as time passes. The situation has obviously become progressively worse over the lastWeeks. I was surprised. The damage and the incident could not be adequately corrected in a few days, despite the world-class technology of the Japanese nuclear power generation.

Although my opinion on use of nuclear power as an energy source is neutral, I have a problem because of the destructive nature of the power source. I could not help but think people need to make the right decision to use nuclear energy for an alternative energy source. The stories reminded me of damage and accidentsChinese ancient history with nature. It 'was a story from the Zhuangzi. Although the legs of the crane birds are too long, if you cut the birds would not survive. Even if the legs are short of sparrows if they are produced, it would not work. The long legs of birds cranes were to keep them dry while standing in water, the short legs of sparrows are safe to stand on the branches of trees.

I hope that is not the use of nuclear energy trying to changeimmutable nature: in other words, shortening, action for the legs of cranes and extend the legs of the sparrows. Otherwise, I hope we can establish a comprehensive countermeasures for this type of natural disaster.

How Earthquake Retrofitting Prevents Structural Damage

One wonders why notice is not enough to make you learn something. Why does it have to be sense all the time that can teach you how to protect yourself? So many earthquakes have come over the years in every part of the world. Each year thousands of people lose their houses and asset in the wake of this natural calamity. Still people do not identify the importance of earthquake retrofitting. Every buildings and every construction is vulnerable to structural damage which comes with earthquake. So when we know the danger, why warrant ourselves a death by not retrofitting the house? All this process, also called foundation bolting, requires is to add foundation bolts into the concrete though a wooden piece that is placed on top of the foundation. Just by doing this diminutive favor, you can protect your house from becoming shaky when earthquake hits the ground.

The foundation bolts are of two types, expansion foundation bolts and epoxy set foundation bolts. If you have newly built your house the type of bolt you wish for prosperous earthquake retrofitting is expansion bolts. They are less precious and are good for areas more prone to earthquake damage. If the foundation is old, adding epoxy bolts will work well. They should be deeply added into the concrete to ensure good protection.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

A term less technical and somewhat similar in purpose to earthquake retrofitting is earthquake proofing. Earthquake proofing refers to making your house resistant to the severe damage earthquakes causes. There are varieties of products in the market to protect you and your asset only if instead of ignoring you make use of them at the right time. Home correction shop have furniture-saving kits which you can use to secure your cabinets, furniture and other such possessions. Apart from this, to earthquake proof your house you can secure your refrigerators and other home appliances by making them stick to the walls. The makers are more implicated about the customer's security rather than the customer himself. They attach angle clips to the top of the refrigerators so that it can be bolted to the wall only if the customer notices it. Computers and other tool wherein lies the life of most of us can be protected by placing on them nylon straps that too can be bolted to walls.

Thus straight through a lot of ways we can save ourselves from the devastation earthquake can bring to your life and property. Earthquake proofing and earthquake retrofitting is a arresting measure to be taken in order to avoid the damage. Once calamity hits, it will take only seconds to reduce an unbolted house to debris. It is whether now or never!

Hard Drive Damage After an Earthquake

Hard drives are extremely sensitive devices. They have a whole lot of components fitted into them. These parts are the main 'foundations' on which our systems run. A failure of any part could cause permanent damage to the data stored in our systems or worse could cause permanent loss of the same. Most users today are meticulous and take all the primary precautions to ensure that the hard drive is 'healthy' and in perfect condition. Uncomplicated precautions like manufacture sure it is away from heat and dust, or ensuring that no liquid spills on the principles etc all help in manufacture sure that the data in our computer remains safe. While shifting our principles from one place to another, we take pains of manufacture sure that it does not get hit or fall and get damaged in the process. One gets a technician to repair any part which is manufacture sounds in the hard drive.

Nature, however, still has an upper hand on technology. We can take all the precautions we can maybe think of and still when nature lashes out in all its fury, we have no control on it!! When an earthquake takes place, for example, one can only hope that the data in their systems is all safe.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

Major earthquakes cause major damages too. When concrete doesn't stand much of a opening escaping with no damage, there are few chances that a computer or laptop would. The hard drives tend to just break while major earthquakes thus causing hard drive damage.

Mild earthquakes cause less damage, or so some think. The damage could be enormous, but only experts would be able to tell. To you and me, it would look very minor. Since the drive is made of many smaller components, each one could get affected gravely and we may not even know it. There could be any 'internal injuries', to the drive. Due to the hard vibrations while the earthquakes, the motor would have failed, the head might have broken, etc. None of these damages are graphic to us. Only experienced citizen can give us an precise analysis on the situation.

After an earthquake, one should consult Data rescue Services and ask them to diagnose the problems one is facing. In case the hard drive has broken or due to any internal damage, you lose your data stored on the system, these fellowships also have hard drive rescue services which can recover that data.
