Chile's 8.8 Earthquake - City of view Moves Over Ten Feet - Seismology 101

Every once in a while planet Earth puts on a show of raw power for its human inhabitants, like earthquakes - as occurred recently in Chile. Of great interest was the remarkable relocation of the major city, Conception, which moved westward (into the ocean) by satellite measurement, a length of over ten feet, nearby cities of capital Santiago and also Valparaiso each intriguing about one foot. It was if a giant hand had stretched the land along an roughly directly westward line (slightly downward) for ten feet at Conception, while adjacent ground moved only a tenth that length - indicating valuable "shearing" of the land mass both north and south of Conception.

What causes quakes, by tectonic plate theory, is that the ground along either side of a fracture or crack in the ground, called a "fault", moves to comfort a local build-up of stress and strain in a worldwide cycle of strain buildup and strain release - the tectonic plates continent-size. Earthquakes are not randomly distributed over the Earth's surface, tending to concentrate in narrow zones where volcanoes and mountain ranges are also located. The thought of plate tectonics has revolutionized thinking in Earth's sciences in just the last decade, going beyond the initial thought of continental drift, proposed a century ago, and sea-floor spreading. Plate tectonics tells us that the Earth's rigid outer shell (lithosphere) is broken into a mosaic of oceanic and continental plates, which slide over the plastic aesthenosphere, the uppermost layer of the Earth's mantle. The lithosphere covers the entire Earth along with the ocean plates, intriguing sea-floor spreading and mid-ocean ridges, a theory of narrow submarine cracks which are found at the center of major oceans. The ocean floor is being continuously pulled apart along these mid-ocean ridges, with hot volcanic material rising from the Earth's mantle to fill the gap, continuously forming new oceanic crust.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

We now know that there are seven major crustal plates, subdivided into a amount of smaller plates. A plate ordinarily encompasses an entire continent, such as the North American, South American and African plates. The plates are in constant motion, interacting along their margins, where major geological processes take place, such as formation of mountain ranges, valleys, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Techtonic plates are about fifty miles thick, and in constant motion relative to each other, the movement rates varying from 10 to 130 millimeters per year. As we learn more and more about the major plates, we find that many involved and intricate movements take place. We learn, too, that most of the geological activity - mountains, rift valleys, volcanoes, earthquakes, faulting - is due to dissimilar types of interaction at the plate boundaries.

One of the keys to plate tectonics was the discovery that the Earth's magnetic field has reversed its polarity 170 times in the last 80 million years. As molten basaltic material squeezes up into the mid-ocean cracks and solidifies, it becomes magnetized agreeing to the Earth's magnetic field polarity. If the field reverses its polarity, the strip of new material is magnetized oppositely, and as the oceanic floor continues to spread, the new strips of rock are carried away on either side. Using these magnetic strips as evidence of movement, it has come to be clear that the Earth's surface consists of a mosaic of crustal plates continually jostling each other. With a continual influx of new volcanic material at the ocean ridges, old crust becomes destroyed where plates collide, and earthquakes occur - also, as happens in Chile, one plate is forced under the other (subduction - downward movement), sometimes to be consumed deep in the mantle.

In the case of the Chilean earthquakes, the Nazca plate intriguing under the the South American plate is what caused the major quake back in 1960, as well as the recent one and others in between. The Nazca plate continues to dive down below the continent, this constant slow movement (with some occasional rapid shifts foremost to big jolts) is what creates frequent earthquakes throughout that region. The most superior earthquake in recent times was the 1960 Chile earthquake; measured by the amount of power released by the movement of the ground - 9.5 on the occasion Magnitude (Mw) scale. The epicenter (the point on the earth's surface directly above the focus point) was 36 miles below the ocean floor, about 100 miles west of the coast of Chile, in the Pacific Ocean. Two very large quakes happened in Chile: on March 3, 1985, and on July 30, 1995, both with a magnitude of about 8. Chilean earthquakes are neither rare nor small, seeming to occur about every 25 to 100 years - and will apparently continue as long as the Nazca plate continues subducting, crashing into and diving under the South American plate: the same geologic event that, over time, has built up the Andean mountain range.

It is estimated that about 140 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater will occur each year, roughly all within the valuable areas, composing about 10 percent of the Earth's surface. The interiors of the plates themselves are largely free of large earthquakes, although there have been famous exceptions: the 1811-1812 earthquakes at New Madrid, Missouri and the 1886 earthquake at Charleston, South Carolina.

Tsunami Tales

As we pass the third anniversary of the tsunami tragedy that struck South East Asia on 26th Dec 2004, it seems like a good time to look back and laid out a few personal experiences from people in Phuket, Thailand. These are not big stories in the extensive scale of the event, they are just a few private accounts from people who were there when the waves struck.

Mark, Bar Owner

Mark ran a bar in one of the side streets just off Bangla Road in Patong. On the morning the tsunami struck, he had just opened his shutters. He had one waitress helping and they were beginning to get ready for business when he heard a strange roaring noise. A few seconds later, there were shouts and screams.

Mildly curious, but not too concerned, Mark looked down the road and saw people running up Bangla Road. Then he was amazed to see water come nearby the corner. Even then, he was not too concerned. It was just a slow steady flow. He told his waitress to stay inside the bar and they watched the water flow passed. Incredibly, the steady flow kept coming and fast became a torrent of debris-strewn water that was swirling into the bar. Mark and his waitress suddenly realised they were in trouble and had to jump up onto the bar.

The building was fast filling up with a swirling deluge of water and debris. For the first time, Mark realised their lives were in danger. The water level was coming up fast and trying to swim straight through that water full of chairs, tables and all kind of other hard objects would be suicidal. You have to see the power with which the water was slamming objects into the walls to realise how hopeless this situation was.

Then, like a scene from some implausible activity movie, a jet-ski floated into the bar with the keys in the ignition. The wave had picked it up from the beach and swept it up Soi Bangla and into Mark's bar like a lifeline. Mark jumped on the jet-ski and started the engine. His waitress jumped on the back and they revved out of the bar and down the street, crunching straight through all kind of floating debris as they went. They turned up Bangla Road and rode the now easing torrent James Bond like to Rat-U-Thit Road where the waters had reached.

As soon as Mark jumped off the jet-ski, there was a man begging to take it. He had lost a friend at the beach and was desperate to get down there to find him. Mark gave him the jet-ski. Of course, nobody knew there was a second and third wave still to come. Mark does not know if the man found his friend or made it back.

Nick, Phi Phi Islands

Nick and his friend were staying on the Phi Phi Islands. They had found a room above a grocery shop in Ton Sai Bay. On Boxing Day morning, they were woken up by a loud roaring noise and then the sound of objects battering into the side of the building. They looked out over their balcony and saw the splendid sight of a flood of water rolling right over the sandy isthmus, right underneath them and out over the other side of the bay. Among the floodwaters, they could see people swept away.

When the waters finally passed by, they made their way downstairs. The shop had survived the hit reasonably well and the shop owner was still inside surveying the damage. Nick and his friend were a minuscule dazed by what had just happened and offered to help the shop owner clear the mess. It seemed like the decent thing to do. Somehow, the shop owner knew the danger had not passed. He said they should make their way down the beach and up the hill to higher ground.

As they walked along the beach, many other people joined them. There were also many others not heading for higher ground. Nick and his friend did not see the second wave hit. They had been production their way up the hill for maybe fifteen minutes when they heard the roar of the wave striking. They had already found a spot to determine down with many other survivors when they heard the roar of the third wave. They settled down with all the other confused and stunned survivors for a long stay.

There was one guy there, a Scotsman, who seemed to have a firmer grip on the situation than most others. He spoke with Nick and his friend. He reasoned that if these waves had struck Phi Phi then they had probably struck everywhere else in the region too. It might be days before help arrived. He said they needed to go back down the hill to get water, food, rehabilitation and insect repellent.

The Scotsman led a group of five, including Nick and his friend, back down the hill. They met a horror scene of destruction. The island was devastated and littered with corpses. They found a shop that although smashed, was still standing. They rummaged nearby the piles of stock inside until they found all the essentials they could carry. They took them back up the hill and distributed them among the survivors. They realised it was not sufficient so they made a second trip down the hill. By the time that round trip was completed, it was late afternoon but they had sufficient essentials for everyone. They made a third trip but this time all they got was beer. This they did not distribute among the other survivors. This was for themselves.

They all spent the night on the hill before people started production their way down in the morning. The relief ferries arrived mid morning.

Mike, Rawai

Mike is a Canadian who stays in Phuket 6-months a year. He was one of the few people in Phuket who verily noticed the earthquake. He was having a coffee on his balcony when he noticed the plant pot next to him vibrating. He had experienced mild tremors before in the United States and was convinced what he had noticed was a minor earthquake. He soon forgot about it. He was meeting friends for breakfast in Rawai.

They met at their usual restaurant over the road from Rawai Beach. Everything was general until one of his friends pointed out how far the sea had receded. Rawai is a shallow bay and it is common to see the rocky seabed when the tide is out but this morning it was as if the water had vanished. The friends curiously discussed this strange phenomenon and pointed it out to the restaurant owner. He was concerned, something seemed wrong. That was when Mike remembered the earthquake tremor he had felt earlier that morning.

Without verily knowing exactly why he was so concerned, the restaurant owner decided to lead his guests out the back of the restaurant to the fields behind. A few minutes later as they calmly walked up a gentle hill, they heard the wave assault the beach.

The islands off Rawai Beach took a lot of the power out of the tsunami and the waves only made it a hundred meters or so inland. Still they claimed victims in Rawai.

Paul, Patong

Paul was still a minuscule dazed from his Christmas Day celebrations in the bars of Patong the night before. He was heading down to the beach for a morning walk to shake off his hangover. He was only a hundred meters from the beach when he heard that strange roaring sound so many people remember. Still it was a few more seconds before he saw the water running up the road towards him. Confused by this strange sight, he wasted a few high-priced seconds taking in the scene. Then he realised the water was going to keep coming. He turned and ran.

The water was already nearby his ankles. He ran as fast as he could but the water was going faster. It was fast nearby his knees and then it took him off his feet. The swell was sweeping him along and with incredible force. Ahead was a brick wall and the wave was going to smash him right into it. Paul plan he was a gonna but as the foremost edge of the wave hit the wall, the force knocked the wall down the Paul was swept straight through the gap. He found himself in a cemetery hanging on to a headstone with water and debris swirling nearby him.

He clung on for dear life. When the waters began to recede, he could feel the suction pulling him back towards the sea. When the waters were finally gone Paul picked himself up, bruised and battered, he walked back to his apartment. His hangover was gone.

Conclusion

We will never know the exact death toll from the Boxing Day tsunami. Somewhere nearby a quarter of a million people lost their lives. It is one of the biggest natural disasters in recorded history.
The stories above cannot begin to capture the full scale of the disaster. They are just a few personal accounts to give some comprehension into the experiences of people caught up in that life-changing day.

WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM, WE PROMISE YOU WOULDN'T BE IMPOSING AT ALL. Seriously! If you live in Japan, please tell me - what are your plans for survival in the next few weeks? It doesn't look like it's going to get any BETTER - and the ground isn't going to un-liquify itself, not to mention the relentless earthquakes and solar activity egging THOSE on.... I mean, are we just suposed to watch them sink and die in a catastrophe? Do you see how many of these souls fit themselves onto those tiny islands? We have so much space in the US that is not being used, SOOO MUCH land and space for people to live or atleast to come and be safe until things settle down. They should atleast send their students/children/caretakers of the children and the elderly, those of which would chose to come... We could set up hostiles. These are a very intelligent brand of people, I wouldn't mind their influence on our society. They are cool and peaceful. If you live in Japan, you should consider coming to the US where its safe ;.;... WHY ISN'T THE US GOVERNMENT OFFERING RELIEF AND EVACUATION?! OF JAPAN ALTOGETHER? ARE WE SERIOUSLY SUPOSED TO JUST SIT HERE REPORTING ON WHAT HAPPENS WHILE THEY DIE!?

oppressive explore following the tsunami catastrophe of 2004 showed that many other coastlines are also in danger of tsunamis. Thus the Atlantic coast and the Mediterranean coast are not safe from tsunamis and therefore must be best protected. Few tsunami catastrophes occur in the Atlantic in comparison to the Pacific. The tsunamis at Lisbon and at Puerto Rico were up to now the largest tsunami catastrophes and thousands of habitancy lost their lives.

The Earth's Interior

Our planet consists of many treasures hidden in its fold, we need to explore. Much of the information existing on the Earth's interior comes from studies of how seismic waves travel through the Earth, and laboratory tests on the surface of minerals and rocks at high pressure and temperature. Other important information comes from geological observations and the flow of heat from the earth.
outermost surface of the earth's crust is called the crust. L 'Crust is generally thick, about 25 miles thick beneath the continents and about 6.5 km beneath the oceans. The crust is relatively light and fragile. The thickness and composition of the Earth are different for land and sea. Most earthquakes occur within the crust. The crust in this image is much smaller than in the real world!

The mantle extends to a depth of 2890 km, making it the thickest layer of earth. The pressure at the bottom of the mantle, is 140 GPa. The sheath is made up ofsilicates, which are relatively rich in iron and magnesium in the overlying crust. Although solid, due to high temperatures in the mantle of silicate material sufficiently ductile. Going from the mantle to the core, there is a significant decline (30 percent) in the speed of seismic waves and a significant increase (30 percent) in density. The core is the innermost layer of the earth. And 'the outer core and inner core together. The outer core is liquid, because it assumes thatdoes not transmit shear (S) waves, and because the rate of compression (P) waves passing through them is greatly reduced. The inner core is crossed, as the behavior of sound waves P and S. Well, it's above description of the main layers of our Mother Earth. It 'important to know about them to arrive at an understanding of the earth in better shape. The Earth's Interior

UFO Sightings Japan 2011

UFO Sightings Japan 2011 Tube. Duration : 5.23 Mins.

There has been an increase in UFO sightings in Japan before and after the earthquake in March and April 2011. Wonder why? 'A number of UFO sightings, some coinciding with the natural disasters that happened, were videoed in Japan over the past month. A week before the 9.0-magnitude earthquake, on March 3, four UFOs were filmed hovering over the Haneda Airport. The four objects, three appearing as individual lights and the other appearing as three lights closely next to each other, stayed still in the sky during the video while airplanes flew by. During the devastating tsunami and earthquake on March 11, multiple UFOs were sighted. In live news footage of the tsunami, objects moving rapidly against the advancing waves can be seen jetting off into the distance or ascending rapidly out of sight. In addition, a live CNN news segment shows an object hovering close to the damaged nuclear reactor in Fukushima. The object hovers very low and close to the billows of smoke rising from the reactor, before slowly moving off and disappearing. UFO sightings coincided with numerous eruptions of the Sakurajima volcano that also occurred on March 11. As seen from several angles of live streaming survey cameras, UFOs hover close to the volcano during its eruption, and bright lights travel at the base of the mountain. A similar sighting was spotted during the eruption on April 3, during which large blue and green orbs were also seen appearing from time to time. Similar footage of large UFO ...

Natural disasters to ensure your appetite

Once the house is well provided for those with little 'of serenity, especially when the storm raging outside. People insure their homes to support their families financially from all types of natural hazards, damage to property. And while most believe that their insurance policies cover, ultimately, only one type of natural disaster, the reality might be exactly the opposite. Here are five types of natural hazards, both your home and your hard-hitPayments, whether insured or not your home.
1. Hurricanes

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

hurricane wind damage is quite common in the Gulf of Mexico coast and half of the states. Every year hurricanes cause millions and billions of dollars in property damage. And while in some states, including hurricane damage is the standard policy in most states, the need for more of this natural disaster, in order to adopt a policy to counter used to have you come homeagainst losses caused by hurricanes. 2. Flood flood damage may result either from a rainstorm or the dynamics of water nearby. In any case, the damage of your house will flood again only when you cover an additional Weber purchase your insurance policy or a separate insurance for flood damage. If finance in an area of high flood risk and the use of a mortgage to buy your house from the lender will require flood insurance to buyCover for the loan in the first place. 3. Frozen pipes Frozen pipes can be caused by snowstorms and freezing temperatures for an extended period. Frozen pipes can seriously damage your home because they can cut off water and even heat distribution. be covered by most homeowners insurance house and such damages. However, some insurers refuse, if they prove your claim that the tubes were frozen because they do not permanently maintain the temperature. This can happen when extreme weather conditions outside. So be looking for this unfortunate exception. 4. Landslides With a standard home insurance is not out to damage caused by landslides or mudslides. In some cases the damage caused by debris for possible coverage events may be included but that is if you have one in the first place. If you happen to an area with a high risk of landslides (hills or mountains), we would live betterPurchase insurance as a supplement to your standard policy. However, when the landslide landslide or an earthquake, it is better to have caused an earthquake insurance protection because it covers such damages. 5. Earthquake Earthquakes are a special type of natural disasters that are not included in standard policies. If you want to be protected from damage by an earthquake, you must purchase a separate policy. However, earthquakes often cause more damage with fireor explosion of gas from the cracks of the earth and moving. This damage is covered by a standard homeowners insurance are covered. It would be better if they both live in an area at risk of earthquakes. Natural disasters to ensure your appetite

Earthquake Proof Cabinets - A Wise Home revising

Are you finding for a home revision project to do nearby the house; something that will add value to your home, but not a project that will send you to the poor house during this recession? If this is the type of a project you are finding for I have a merge of ideas.

First of all, it makes sense to retrofit your cabinets nearby the home. Especially if you have young children, and you want to make sure they don't get into any items that could hurt them. But even if you don't, you might reconsider retrofitting your cabinets and production them Earthquake proof.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

Despite what habitancy think there's no such thing as earthquake season and quakes can come at any time. Even those habitancy who do not live in known Earthquake areas may be jolted into a rude awakening when the ground below them starts shaking. It makes sense to do the certain home improvements to keep your family from harm during a big quake; such as strapping your water heaters, and fastening your largest and heaviest furniture to actual studs in the wall.

Still, you mustn't forget all your breakable items there in all your cabinets. When a big one comes, the cabinet doors will fly open and all things on the shelves will be launched like a missile through the kitchen, over rooms, and onto the floor of your home.

This can make a unblemished mass, not to mention cost you thousands of dollars in broken goods, or even destroyed family heirlooms. I hope you will please reconsider this very easy home-improvement project. One that must be done before the big one comes. Think on it and then take action.

If Puget Sound Is Falling Down

William Steele, the Seismology Lab Coordinator at the University of Washington Geophysics Program, has a son, Chris, who goes to elementary school. "He comes in sometimes and he loves to do stuff." It seems he'd recently put a fastener on one of the lab's monitors, and his father had some issue accessing the equipment. "What an excuse!" Steele never did get into the program he'd wanted to show me.
December 4th of last year there was a magnitude 5.1 quake in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Aftershocks were felt in Washington State. I had headed out to the Uw in quest of facts on up-to-date earthquake performance in the Puget Sound region.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

"Oregon is relatively quiet next to Washington. But this year, we've had an gargantuan estimate of performance in Oregon, counter to past patterns." Klamath Falls couldn't be noisier, said Steele, ticking off the numbers: September 4th, 5.9; Sept. 20th, 5.9, 5.0, 4.3; Dec. 4th, 5.1; and Christmas Day, 4.0, 3.4. Most of our local performance in the Puget Sound region is recorded by the Uw's lab equipment. They have an emergency establishment computer program called "Beat the Quake," hailing from the land of quakes, California, which has suffered straight through quite a lot of severe earthquake damage lately. That's the program Steele had issue running on his computer. Fortunately, the Uw's Seismology Lab has far more emergency preparedness facts "so we don't have to begin from ground zero" in the likely event of an earthquake. Steele is also the public facts Officer face quakes straight through the Uw. "We have 135 seismic stations throughout Washington and Oregon, currently operating, and we're expanding. We literally cover a tremendously broad area."They uncover quakes precisely, then decide the magnitude (quantity of total vigor released by the quake), location (area affected by the quake), and epicenter (location on the face directly above the focus, or place where an earthquake originates.)They regain data about the geology of the region as well. "It's necessary data. This lab is an educational center for graduate students in geophysics." They also educate citizens. School groups bring in students, and Steele speaks at civic organizations, encouraging people to take performance and make themselves safer from earthquakes.Of course, the big interrogate every person asks is, "When?""We're not able to put down a date. It's more complicated because three types of quakes occur in the Puget Sound region. The most tasteless are deep earthquakes."Signals tour straight through the planet's crust, sometimes all the way from the other side." Events from in any place show up on their helicorder sheets, production an analog, a 24-hour record, of every quake. For example, the Klamath Falls quakes, which are very near California on the Oregon coast."We cover the Cascade Range, and have multiple stations on every volcano. We have a good center at Mt. Baker, adequate to cover the region." Earthquakes colse to volcanoes are very common. The lab shares data with California for quakes occurring on the border of California and Oregon. "We're part of the Washington Regional Seismic Network." Steele showed me a map of Pacific Northwest Seismicity, 1969-1991. There were huge blue clusters in Puget Sound. What are those, I asked. "Moderate, shallow, and deep quakes. The deep clusters are in the Puget Basin."Deep earthquakes, the ones you literally tend to write home about, are the largest in magnitude as measured on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. The values regularly range from 1.0 (not felt) to 7.0 (extreme damage to structure and land surfaces). They can go even higher, as they have in up-to-date deep quakes in Alaska. Here's what's happening in Puget Sound: about 300 kilometers or more out from the coast is where the deep quakes are generated. There's a ridge 500 to 700 kilometers out called the Juan de Fuca Ridge, and new material, new sea floor, is being deposited all the time along it. It pushes the Juan de Fuca plate toward the North American plate underneath the Seattle area. The Juan de Fuca plate moves an average of two inches a year, towards us, lifting the other plate.A border zone locks it up, an interface between the two plates that stops the oceanic plate, production it subduct below us, forcing the ocean plate down into the mantle of the Earth. This boundary is called the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and extends from the middle of Vancouver Island in British Columbia down to Northern California. The Earth's mantle lies below its fragile crust. It's semi-solid, due to gargantuan heat and pressure. "Our Cascade volcanoes are probably there because of plate subduction below us. The push deforms the crust and builds up gargantuan stresses. Right now, the coast of Washington is rising. It's bulging up." The oceanic plate is "cold rock" and the shock of the two troops meeting leads to deep earthquakes. Washington has recently experienced two large ones, in 1949 and 1965.A flyer from the lab states that approximately 1,000 earthquakes per year are recorded in Washington and Oregon. "Between one and two dozen of these cause adequate ground shaking to be felt by residents. Most are in the Puget Sound region, and few cause any real damage. However, based on the history of past damaging earthquakes and our insight of the geologic history of the Pacific Northwest, we are distinct that damaging earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 or greater) will recur in our area, although we have no way to predict either this is more likely to be today, or years from now." Steele thinks it will be soon."In 1949, there was a severe earthquake in Olympia, 7.1. Eight people were killed and there was millions of dollars worth of asset damage. The quake was located 70 kilometers deep."In 1965, there was a magnitude 6.5 quake between Seattle and Tacoma." Both earthquakes were felt as far away as Montana. But there were no aftershocks, as is usual during a deep quake. The infamous aftershocks, known to catch people in the middle of recovering from a bad earthquake, happen during land-based shallow earthquakes. The ocean-based shocks occurred once, causing ground tremors that lasted several minutes. "The 1965 quake killed about five people, and again there was millions of dollars of asset damage." Other deep events, difficult to intuit from records of the times, occurred in 1882, 1909, and 1939. "Every 35 years or so a 6.0+ magnitude quake occurs below Puget Basin. The whole region along the coast will shift at once. When it finally builds up adequate pressure to kick up, it'll be a big one."Eighty percent of the quakes on the planet happen along the Pacific North West Rim, which is referred to as "The Ring of Fire" because of all our volcanic activity. In 1964, one year before this area's last big event, south-central Alaska generated a monster 9.3 quake, shaking the ground for twenty minutes, generating tidal waves that decimated Seward's coast, affected 34,000 square miles, and killed 143 people. And there's been up-to-date large quakes in Cape Mendecino, California, and Parkfield, California, infamous for ground shaking, in 1992.Brian Atwater of the Usgs (United States Geological Service) and the Uw geology branch has done studies along the coasts of Washington and Oregon. He's found a kind of layered soil…"what he found…ghost forests killed by the last big quakes. Subduction zone material covered by tasteless black sand." A layer gently turned into forest floor and then the sand layer. "As bulging continues, coastline rises, and low-lying areas are flushed clean by salt water. Stress released during the quake makes the coastline subside by seven or eight feet. It ‘drops.' If you're living at five feet above sea level, it's not a very comfortable thing."Earthquakes also originate large tsunamis, or tidal waves; the biggest ones, generated by larger quakes, can rip up an entire coastline for miles, wiping out bridges, roads, and buildings. The literally great subduction zone quakes, 9.0 or more, only occur about once a century on the face of the planet. Strangely, a big quake may corollary in only about three-and-a-half minutes worth of strong ground shaking, which doesn't sound like much. "One up-to-date California quake was only seventeen seconds of strong ground motion, a 7.1 quake. A 7.0 quake releases the equivalent of 199,000 tons of Tnt in energy; a 9.0 releases 200 million tons, or 17,000 atomic bombs' worth of force."The inequity between an 8 and a 9 is greater than the inequity between a 2 and an 8, because of the logarithmic scale. The force increases exponentially. It gets 30 times greater each time." I wondered if it ever goes up to 10.0.By carbon-14 dating organic matter in ground and sea levels, "scientists can decide approximate dates for events going back 10,000 years." finding clues about these earthquakes involves both painstaking study and educated guesswork.Research has recently identified a Seattle fault which generated a large quake between 1,000 to 1,100 years ago. "There were landslides, and a huge seiche-when something big falls in the water, creating waves like tsunamis. Large block landslides occurred in forests. Restoration Point on Bainbridge Island rose twenty feet from Puget Sound in seconds during that event."Buildup from glacial ice sheets once face the continent make it difficult to analyze shallow crust faults. But geologists are pretty sure there are two major Seattle faults. The biggest one runs from the north tip of Mercer Island straight through Eastgate to the Kingdome, just north of West Seattle. The other fault runs straight through White Center, parallel to the bigger one. In 1872, an estimated 7.3 shallow quake caused what seismologists call "felt reports" from observers, the only evidence of some older quakes. Native Americans tell legends about what must have been some very sizeable earthquakes and tsunamis.Nowadays, all the real-time telemetry (automatic transmission of data from a distant source to a receiving station) comes straight through in the back of the lab, where Steele poured me a cup of Starbucks coffee at their metal sink in a very equipment-crowded space. "Relays ‘zap' performance vigor in nanoseconds to the lab. Before people in a region know what's going to hit them, we do." The helicorders monitor 23 stations on analog. "We focus on volcanoes. All stations, together with the ones on helicorders, go onto the computer theory in the next room. The discriminator in the back takes Fm carrier signals and separates them from seismic signals, leaving an amplified seismic signal. It goes to the front room, changing into digital facts the computer can read."If it picks up a ‘jump' (a skip in the needle on the helicorder) on a station, it checks other stations and records all data, either there's a signal or not. If it's a big quake, it does estimates of the magnitude etc. Via programs, beeps the people (like Steele), and sends facts to seismologists colse to the region." Steele might hear a "beep" anytime. As I drank my coffee, Steele told me he's a grad student, his life's partner works, and together they reserve their family, renting a house in Wallingford and raising two kids. "It's a rewarding job, but…the rewards are not monetary." Nonetheless, he feels treated as a colleague by everyone, and has a good working connection with all his "fellows at the lab."About earthquake preparedness, Steele is adamant. "The secret is not fear and loathing in Seattle, and that we have to hide under our beds. Let's get ready. Our schools need to get to the point where we can withstand a 7.4 earthquake. How many itsybitsy bodies do we need under bricks before we start spending some money?" Right now, there are no definite laws enforcing earthquake construction codes, "if the construction code years ago said you could pile bricks without mortar on top of each other."Unreinforced masonry creates structures that fall during even moderate earthquakes. "The entire wall of a school can fall down and kill students. A brick that falls three stories doesn't slow down," he said, referring to the death of a boy during the 1965 earthquake. Steele is distinct such deaths are preventable. At least six schools in Oregon have unreinforced structures, bricks that can fall and fill a doorway, blocking the exit. "Retrofit them, or tear them down and build another school. If a school has been determined unsafe for a quake lately, they can sell it, and it becomes a senior center. No laws stop that. These structure need to be brought up to code or taken down. Deaths will happen unless we act. India just had a 6.8 quake…tens of thousands dead. There needs to be water and food stored away to last 72 hours. You need to get under a table and ride it out; get down on the ground, under something; check to see if you smell gas, and turn it off; electricity, too."You should get to know your community resources, Steele said. And in case of severe aftershocks, if you're in a construction "you should wait until the shaking stops, and then get out." Lots of people are killed by falling debris while evacuating buildings. The estimate of Fema (the Federal emergency supervision Agency) in Woodinville, headed by Chris Trisler, is (206) 487-4645. It's their job to assist people with earthquake preparedness. What does Steele see in the immediate future? "I expect more of the same. Probably some quakes greater than 4.0 in the Puget Sound area. While we've been talking, there've been events in Klamath Falls,." As I write this, there are aftershocks east of the Dec. 4 "sequence" starting in Klamath Falls. "The interrogate is, are we going to recognize the danger and do something about it, or are we going to wait until we have an adequate death toll? I'd like to see a dedicated plan and some leadership from the state. It'll be a lot of money."Steele said a colleague of his said it best: "The next great disaster will happen as soon as we forget about the last one."Some of the facts in this record is from "Washington State Earthquake Hazards," by Lawrance, Qamar, and Thorsen, 1988.)What To Do Other Than Scream Your Lungs Out - Fall Down!Apparently, you may hear a very loud, construction sound before the frenzy begins. The below is from "How to Survive in Earthquake Country," a Fema pamphlet. Find out about your risks, at home, and in your workplace. Get more specifics from the American Red Cross, or Fema.Learn what causes injuries: parts falling off construction exteriors and interiors; flying pieces of broken glass; overturning bookcases; unanchored water heaters; storage facilities; whatever made of glass; fires from damaged gas lines; galvanic lines; wood stoves; chimneys; toxic fumes. Create emergency preparedness plans: find safe spots in your home; recognize leave routes; plan two ways out of each room; pick two places to meet, face your house and face the neighborhood if you can't return home; show every person how to shut off water, gas and electricity; institution your plans, now. Read "Your house Disaster Plan," and "Emergency Preparedness Checklist," which you can get from Fema.Reduce earthquake hazards: rate your home; strap water heaters and gas appliances down; remember, stiff items snap; place heavy objects on lower shelves; anchor all things heavy; anchor hanging objects; reserve community earthquake preparedness.Businesses, schools, daycares, neighborhoods, churches, clubs: hold workshops. Assemble a disaster preparedness kit: store food, water, clothes, a first aid kit, a radio, flashlights, and batteries, good for 72 hours of use, in your car trunk, home, and office. For more details, consult the Fema brochure, "Your house Disaster Supplies Kit."During/after an earthquake: stay calm; don't panic or run. Earthquakes are regularly preceded by loud sounds, so take quick action. You literally have about two seconds, so get ready for that earthquake now to safe yourself and others. Stay where you are: drop, cover and hold something solid, or take immediate cover under a heavy desk or table, in a doorway, hallway, or against inside walls. Turn away from glass. Keep away from chimneys, windows, tall bookcases, and objects that might fall. Evacuate only after the shaking stops. Use the stairs, not the elevator. Remember, aftershocks may occur at any time. Listen to a radio or Tv for instructions. Outdoors: move away from buildings, trees, and utility wires. Sit on the ground until the shaking stops. Flee inland immediately when near a coastline. Check for injuries. Do not move seriously injured people unless they're in danger. Indoors: evacuate damaged buildings, as aftershocks could cause further damage, or structure can collapse. Do not re-enter a construction until it's declared safe by responsible authorities. Don't use the telephone except for emergencies; stay off the phone. Check for fires. Have a fire extinguisher, and know how to use it. Check utilities: gas, electric, and water lines may be broken. Gas: do not use matches, candles, open flames or galvanic switches indoors, because of inherent gas leaks. If you smell gas, open windows, leave, and shut off the main gas valve, which is regularly outside. Electricity: if wiring is broken, shut off electricity at the main switch. Don't touch whatever near downed or damaged lines. Water: if water pipes are broken, shut off the contribute at the main valve outside. Use water from ice cubes, water heaters, toilet tanks (if they don't include chemical cleaners). Clean up spills. Attend determined to spills of potentially harmful materials such as medicines, drugs, and household cleaners. contribute adequate ventilation, as chemicals may concentrate to yield toxic gas. Remember to assist others in need. And also remember: it's not your fault. (Sorry about that, I couldn't resist the joke.)

Emergency Earthquake - 21 Tips to note,

Earthquakes are one of the most devastating of all natural disasters. A rather disturbing but unavoidable fact is that none of humanity, science, devices or measurement scale is able to understand the nature and time to predict the earthquake.

The unique and therefore the most effective way to minimize the impact of severe earthquakes in the midst of human life is making adequate preparations for the earthquake emergency.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

In the situation of an earthquake, you hearthat the ground shaking or rolling. When the earthquake had a great one to sever the movements of the earth's crust is really violent, you could hear the rumble of earth or roaring.

These characteristics of an earthquake, causing panic among the people. In the end, this undermines its chances of survival. Fortunately, earthquakes, severe and devastating that usually do not pass. Even in places where there is a minimal possibility of earthquakes, which placesAnd nations that are close to the Ring of Fire from Earth, it is essential that contingency plans to protect you and your family.

Here are some tips to help you be prepared for emergencies:

1. Prepare an emergency kit

a. It 's very difficult to know what is left after the earthquake, so if you live in an area prone to earthquakes really, you must keep the first aid kit.

b. It 's a kit for everyone in hisHome.

c. Each emergency kit is your lifeline for survival after the earthquake.

d. It should include:
i. a gallon of water
ii. Food for at least 3 days
iii. Select only non-perishable food
iv. The first aid kit

e. Make sure that periodically the contents of the kit, such as food and water.
f. Ensure that food and water in the production of good quality edible that would otherwise be of little use.

2. Know everythingNetwork of all utility

Earthquakes a. often lead to gas leaks because of fire and electricity.
b. You have the power switch all your utilities for you to turn them off, as and when necessary.

3. Check the house for cracks and crevices

a. Be sure to regularly check your State, to ensure that withstand any earthquake.
b. Make sure there are no cracks in the walls and fireplace.
c. The doorFrames must be addressed.
d. If you live in some apartment, and immediately cracks cracks to the landlord.

4. Have an evacuation plan

a. Make sure you and your family or co-presidency, a contingency plan for disasters such as fires, earthquakes and floods are facing.
b. Each member must be aware of their duties and security measures in such situations.
c. Early preparation would provide more security but the family.
Panic & D.Confusion often results in accidents and injuries.

Tips to cope with the disaster of earthquake, while the overhead

1. Make sure you have to stay away from objects that could fall.

2. Make sure you have to stay away from cases of books, hanging objects, units, such as chandeliers, ceiling fans, etc.

3. It 's always best to be down in some sturdy tables and / or door frame.

4. Just do not run.

5. Do not attempt to leave the house.

6. OutsideIt gives the most dangerous things at home waiting to hurt you, like lanterns, and automobiles.

7. The emergency kit to be very accessible and ready at all times.

8. If possible, put the emergency kit in a place where everyone would have at home or in the office running during an earthquake.

9. Make sure you have to stay away from your kitchen. This may be the most dangerous place to hang around the house in case of earthquakes, with several pots and pans, and drawers are fullCutlery and knives.

10. In addition, the gas outlet in the kitchen are very dangerous because part of the fire.

After the earthquake

1. Be sure to strike a match and / or the candle immediately after the earthquake. If gas is leaking, could take the heat.

2. Switch off the main gas valve before lighting a match or a candle.

3. If you suspect a gas leak, open all windows and evacuate the house immediately.

4.Now run gas company, after removal from a gas leak.

5. Make the call only if it can be outside of this place as using a mobile phone at the wheel of a gas flame.

6. Earthquakes are often followed by several aftershocks. Hold down the guard, though, your home and family are all safe.

7. Check the news to obtain information about the earthquake, and other important updates.

Earthquake and Tsunami establishment

Do you live in a region that has risks for an earthquake and/or tsunami? The up-to-date events in Japan, New Zealand, Chile and Haiti have brought to light some catastrophic consequences for these terrible disasters.

The Japanese people are currently experiencing colossal loss of life and destruction of property, and are in danger of a nuclear disaster. The news coverage of the tsunami rushing straight through the coastline of Japan, destroying all in the path of the wave, is overwhelming. Right now, they are in danger of a core meltdown at one of the power plants.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

My brother, Jeff and his girlfriend Diane were able to travel to Haiti one year ago after the earthquake. They volunteered with a project straight through his church, associated with Mission of Hope, and located about 10 miles northwest of Port-au-Prince. After arriving in Haiti, they were in shock at the situation. "The first thing we saw when we landed was the extreme need for food," Jeff said. He told of long lines where people waited for hours for a meal. "People had set up tent cities, and there were thousands of blue tarps," he said. "The earthquake damage was massive; there was rubble as far as you could see."

Mission of Hope has a school, a church, a healing clinic and an orphanage all established back in 1998. Jeff was impressed with the operation. "It is expanding its orphanage from 60 to 240 children. This year they will teach 2,600 young people in their school. It has a clinic open five days a week that treats about 60 patients a day."

Fema has a great website for earthquake information. They list: What to Do Before an Earthquake, What to Do during an Earthquake and What to Do After and Earthquake. Part of accident preparedness for a disaster is a permissible plan, and to have accident and disaster supplies on hand. There are survival kits and storehouse food ready to buy, but here are a few things from the list.

Flashlight and extra batteries Portable battery-operated radio and extra batteries First aid kit and manual Emergency food and water Nonelectric can opener Essential medicines Cash and prestige cards Sturdy shoes

As with any disaster, developed planning and making ready make the ability to survive much more likely. It also makes you great able to help others in distress. Often, there is no way to gain items from a checklist once an accident has started. people are already in panic mode, and market are stripped bare quickly. Survivalist gear in the home, office, school and grab and go can make you more likely to be safe and relatively comfortable.

Our hearts go out to the families of the earthquake/tsunami victims in all the locations mentioned. Disaster recovery is a long process, and we can learn from this in many ways.

About Earthquakes

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

The most distinguished earthquake ever recorded happened in 1960 in Chile. Registering 9.5 on the occasion magnitude scale, it created a tsunami that swept the whole Pacific Ocean. In 1972, 90% of the city of Managua, Nicaragua, was destroyed by a midnight earthquake that killed over 10,000 people. Then in 1985, the Great Mexican Earthquake struck, killing as many as 30,000 people, most of whom were never found. In 1989, San Francisco and surrounding areas experienced the "World Series Quake."

Most of them happen along what is known as the circum-Pacific seismic belt or the "Pacific Ring of Fire" bounding the Pacific tectonic plate. With high-population cities like Mexico City, Tehran, and Tokyo growing in areas of high risk, it is potential that a future earthquake could take as many as 3 million lives.

It's hard to understand why population insist on living in earthquake-prone areas like San Francisco and the mountains of central and South America. But in fact, earthquakes are a common phenomenon, small ones happening somewhere in the world every day. Characterized by shaking and ruptures in the land, earthquakes also cause dangerous avalanches and landslides, fires like the terrible 1906 San Francisco experience, soil liquefaction where buildings genuinely sink into the earth, and weighty tsunamis. Because the damage they do is enduring, they also leave high risks for disease in their wake as population try to find potable water to drink and dry, safe places to sleep and live.

People who live in high-probability earthquake zones must live each day as it comes, knowing that their fragile lives could be over in an instant. Knowing that tragedy can assault at any time, they get ready for it.

Technology specialist Jason lives near the Marina, the most high-risk area in his city. He accepts graciously the fact that living there is a risk, but he always shop basic supplies for that inevitable crisis. He keeps some gallons of fresh water, conveyable food packs, extra flashlights and batteries, and some thing-a-magics that would overwhelm the technologically-challenged.

Earthquake safety Tips

* Duck. Stay off heavy objects that may fall. Find an open area or stand in a doorway.

* If you can't get out of the building, seek safety under a heavy table.

* If you're driving when the earthquake strikes, stay inside your car.

* If you're in a mall or store, move away from shelving and other conveyable objects.

* In theaters and stadiums, duck under your seat and wait until the mob has largely left the area. Don't get caught up in the panic-filled crowds.

Another Word of Advice

Being well-prepared, having a plan of action, is the best way to get ready to survive an earthquake. Lacking this comfortable knowledge, you are more likely to panic and make deadly mistakes.

That is why it is essential to know the deductible and have the money set aside in the event the big earthquake happens.

Here are a few ways that this could be taken care of with regards to paying the deductible.

- Borrow Money - the Condo connection can borrow the money for all of the owners who do not have the loss estimation coverage. The money borrowed would wish collateral and the condo owner would then have a lien put upon their unit. Once the loan has been paid in full or the condo sold, the debt would be relieved.

- Foreclosure - In the case that the owner could not afford the amount for the deductible nor could the connection borrow the money to pay, the bank would have to foreclose. The bank would then pay the amount owed to fix the unit for resale.

Having Clean Water Is the First Step to Surviving an Earthquake emergency

Clean Water: Survival Tool #1

Your body is an astounding machine, but deprived of water, it can shut down and cause death from dehydration in as minuscule as 2 days. The human body, by weight, is composed of 2/3 water. Principal for such bodily functions as circulation, respiration, and converting food to energy, potable (clean) water is the most prominent survival tool in urgency situations and is often the most difficult to come by if not prepared.

Earthquake & Tsunami In Japan

The process of dehydration occurs when the intake of water is less than that which is being lost, either though sweat, urine, or respiration. This means that even if you are not exerting power to move, you are still losing water that must be replaced. As dehydration takes hold of the body, the blood begins to thicken, which causes the heart to have to work harder. As the heart works harder to cope with the decrease in blood volume, the body begins to lose whole efficiency and function, and you may palpate dizziness, light headed sensations, and confusion. Maintaining maximum thinking focus and bodily capability are crucial for survival in an urgency situation.

The recommended daily intake of water is two quarts, about a half-gallon, of water a day. This is assuming normal activities (no heavy exercise) and temperate climates. If the amount of activity or the climatic characteristic is increased, so must the amount of water being consumed. It is safe to say that in an urgency situation the level of activity is going to be high. This means that you will need to drink more than just the recommended daily amount of water. In the case of an earthquake, disruption or contamination of the water supply is very probable. This means, no drinking from the usual water sources such as the tap, shower, hose, or toilet (in an urgency you do what you have to), unless it is purified after retrieval.

Drinking contaminated water can cause nausea, lung irritation, dizziness, vomiting, and even death, and since your goal is survival, this is something to avoid at all costs. So how do you get your hands on sufficient water to survive? There are a couple of methods, depending upon your situation that will prevent you from being caught without an ample supply of clean, drinkable water. Water storage units are available, if you have the room.

They come in varied sizes and are a fetch way to know that you will have clean water on hand in case of an emergency. The 55 gallon barrel, for example, could be kept in the garage, laundry room or tool shed, and the loss in storage space is a small price to pay to know you and your family are safe. Water preserver tablets are recommended for long-term storage, and even then it is Principal to turn out the water supply after a unavoidable amount of time.

For those of you that are tight on storage space, or are naturally looking for a more transportable water purification solution, there are also pouches of purified water available. These allow for the easy vehicle of just a few, for trips or outings, and with a five-year shelf life, will not take up precious storage space. Yet other explication is the water purification tablet. These are a great way to be prepared. Often included in bundle urgency survival packages, purification tablets can naturally be dropped into contaminated water for purification purposes, wish very minuscule storage space, are easy to vehicle on your person, and will ensure drinkable water no matter what happens.

The best way to avoid a life threatening situation is to be prepared. Having sufficient clean drinkable water in the event of an earthquake, or other natural disaster, is a key to survival. either it is stored in a water barrel, water pouches, or purified with tablets, don't let yourself get caught unprepared and without water and supplies. Here is to staying safe, hydrated, and ready for anything.

The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906

There are certainly many earthquakes in San Francisco. California residents have long realized that earthquakes are typical of this area and take some getting used to.

But the most famous San Francisco earthquake, the city was devastated in 1906. Before California, also go for a short trip, it's definitely a good idea to warn of possible earthquakes and learn the basic skills to survive.

Why California?

You do not have to be a geologist to understandthe basis of an earthquake in San Francisco. The Earth's surface is covered in tectonic plates. These plates move and change shape through geological and volcanic activity on earth. It 'easy to see with North America as a great sound, "Journal." But in reality is one of several plates.

California is located in the center of two of these boards. It spans the North American and Pacific plates. The San Andreas Fault is the area where two plates meet. The fault isa hotspot of geological activity, and it runs upwards California. The fault extends an impressive distance of 800 miles.

Scientists spend their lives searching and trying to predict earthquakes. This task has proved so difficult that not much progress has been made to date. And then in 1906, the forecast of the earthquake was still far from reality that it is now.

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906

Wednesday, April 18, 1906 at 05:12 clock, the greatSan Francisco earthquake. The general assessment is that the earthquake was a 7.9 on the scale that is commonly known as the Richter scale. Some scientists disagree, and suggest that 8.25 is a better measure. Regardless of the magnitude quake in Los Angeles from Oregon and Nevada also have been taken.

This was not only a terrible earthquake disaster, but San Francisco has been hit by fires accordingly. Some studies suggest that the fire only caused more damage than the shocks. On thisDay in 1906 told the New York Times that there are more than 500 deaths. At the time lost in parts of the city like Chinatown were not reported. This number has grown to more than 3,000 have been updated.

Due to the breakage of gas pipes under the city, entire blocks of fire following the earthquake in San Francisco had been consumed. Even worse, the fire department had few resources to fight the fire because the water pipes were damaged.

The Aftermath

The apartments of approximately225,000 people were left to be damaged beyond repair. Many fled to other parts of the state and the army was called in to assist with emergency accommodation. Small houses were built to facilitate in eleven fields of temporary accommodation. At one point, 16,448 people sought refuge in the small houses, which were packed closely together.

The importance of rebuilding the city was announced by politicians. In an unexpected turn of events that officials intentionally issued statements that seemed to diminish theDamage. Real estate investors because they wanted to return to the city, the scale of the earthquake in San Francisco, in the public eye has been reduced to a minimum.

Pop culture was used after the earthquake as a backdrop for films, novels and plays. Museums like the Museum of Modern Art exhibits, shows regularly in relation to disaster.

Although the whole region fell after the earthquake in San Francisco, the city is now more than ever. Now is the perfect opportunity to visit the culturedNeighborhoods and see the breathtaking scenery and architecture.
